Breakfast food surges on Grubhub during coronavirus pandemic

Food-delivery giant Grubhub (GRUB) said in a press release Monday that it is seeing a record number of new diners and new restaurants on the platform as of late.

So what are Americans eating as they wait out the pandemic? Grubhub took a look at data from the three-week period between March 16 to April 6 and compared it to the three weeks prior. It found that breakfast was the most popular order nationwide during that period.

Orders for sausage, egg and cheese croissants jumped 316% and were the most popular order on Grubhub nationally. Brisket burgers and sausage, egg and cheese biscuits came in at second and third place with increases of 144% and 136% respectively. Chicken caesar salad ranked fourth with 125% gain and donuts rounded out the top five with a 112% surge in popularity.

Taking a look at different regions in the U.S., Grubhub found that Americans in the Midwest had an increased preference for sweet treats. While sausage, egg and cheese burritos were the most popular order there, glazed donut orders soared 119%, fried cheese curds rose 110%, and red velvet cupcakes gained 93% in popularity.

Americans in the Northeast craved comfort foods while staying indoors over recent weeks. Mac and cheese gained 216%, orders for carne asada bowls rose 196%, cinnamon apple pies saw a 160% jump, and Nashville hot chicken sandwiches were 157% more popular, and barbecue burger cravings surged 154%.

People in the South stuck with Tex-Mex and more traditional offerings. Burrito bowls topped the list followed by grilled steak burritos — gaining 298% and 249% respectively. Sausage, egg and cheese croissants rose 244% in popularity, waffle fries jumped 172% and baby back ribs saw a 119% increase.

Finally in the West, sandwiches were the most popular choice among. Sausage, egg and cheese biscuits took the top spot after orders spiked 205%. Spicy chicken sandwiches were the runner up, gaining 158% in order popularity, followed by a 124% surge in pulled pork sandwich orders. Avocado bacon clubs increased 121%, and loaded baked potatoes orders were up 99%.
